The traditional use and rough, strengthening
characteristics of this typical liqueur are such that it mirrors the seafaring
tradition of Livorno, not made up of great navigators but of a generous,
strong people accustomed to every adversity:
Ponce Livornese (Livorno Punch). The use of this typical
liqueur (one part "Ponce Livornese", one part coffee, lemon peel, two teaspoons
of sugar) has always combined well, by affinity and historical-geographical
origins, with the coffees produced by the numerous drug-stores of Livorno,
a free port in all respects. Because of this affinity with coffee, in 1987
Arcaffé took over the firm "Vittori", manufacturers of "Ponce Livornese",
in order to keep the liqueur on the market and to promote consumption of
one of the few typical products of an atypical seafaring city.
